Can’t Pass IELTS Writing? Why You Keep Failing, and What to Fix

If you keep failing Writing but pass everything else, you are not a beginner. Your English works every day, at work, in interviews, and in the three other skills you already passed. But Writing comes back half a band short. Again. This problem is common, it is specific, and it can be fixed.

Why can’t I pass IELTS Writing when my English is good?

Why can’t I pass IELTS Writing when my English is good?

Writing is not scored on good English. It is scored on four criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy. A strong writer can still repeat two or three band-capping patterns in every essay: an opinion the examiner cannot clearly find, paragraphs that add ideas instead of developing them, or complex sentences that break the same way every time.

Practice without a diagnosis repeats those patterns and makes them stronger.

The change is diagnosis: a named, ranked list of the exact issues capping your band, each one shown in a quotation from your own writing, each one coded, and each code pointing at the one lesson that trains it. The work gets smaller, progress becomes visible, and you stop wasting time on things that are not holding your band down.
